2009 - What a year!

2009 was certainly an amazing year.
Upon reflection, a handful highlights stood out for me.
  • Being at the birth of our second son, Benjamin, born in August. An amazing experience. Anne - you are a champion!

  • Seeing our first son, Oliver growing up and turning 3 in March. He is too cool!

  • Responding in my own way to Black Saturday Bush Fires by filming a documentary "The Phoenix Appeal" The story of indipendent musicians putting on 10 gigs in one day to raise $42,000 for the Red Cross. (Thanks to Loz Bowie for the image below).

As I only normally post wedding clips on this blog, I thought I would introduce this side project with the a promo clip from "The Phoenix Appeal" featuring Jeff Lang.
  • Moving studios in June from Ivanhoe to the heart of cosmopolitan Fitzroy. Yes, loads of space, a private cinema, rooftop spa, full kitchen, Brunswick St and Johnston St just around the corner - what more could I ask for!

  • Turning 40 in June (Shhh, don't tell anyone!) I was only one more year older....

  • Being active on the Australian Video Producers Association National Committee. www.avpa.com.au

  • Being a part of the international community of inspirational event film makers via wedfact (now eventfilmmaker.com)

  • An of course, last but not least, meeting so many amazing Melbourne couples who are engaged and then being part of their wedding day - thank you for trusting me and thank you for sharing!
I am so looking forward to 2010.
I hope to see you there!

It has been a privilege to edit the wedding video of Elma + Ammar as my last wedding for 2009.

Celebrated at the St Kilda Botanical Gardens and at Sails by the Bay, Elwood.

The song chosen for this "Short + Sweet"highlight video is a little jazz number called 'Dance me to the end of Love" by Madeleine Peyroux.

"The Wedding Filmmakers Alliance Of Creative Talent serves to encourage, educate and empower film and video artists from around the world to achieve the highest levels of success in all aspects of wedding filmmaking."
With the WedFACT online wedding video forum, being in Melbourne is no longer a geographic restriction as I now communicate with other wedding video producers from America and around the planet who are also at the top of their field.
WedFACT is a great resource and is aligned with my constant learning philosophy.
I'm not one to sit back on my laurels and stagnate, so to speak. For me, I'm only as good as my last wedding video.
I'm always searching for new pathways to take my wedding film making to the next level. WedFACT helps me achieve this.

Introducing our new range of designer Wedding DVD cases. They are highly customized and a sure to impress!

Amelia + Joseph | Wedding Trailer

Ameilia + Joseph were married on Sunday 9th August 2009 at St Leo's in Altona North and the reception was held at Lakeside Receptions in Taylors Lakes. Joseph is a huge Elvis fan so the song "I can't help falling in love" seemed like a good choice for their wedding video trailer.

Filmed in HD with the Sony Z7 by cinematography Ben Plazzer who took my place on the day - their wedding turned out to be the day after my wife gave birth to our second son and I was unfortunately unavailable. They are currently enjoying their honeymoon in America.

Busy, busy, busy in the edit suite//

Well, hasn't it been a busy month!

You may or may not be aware that the wedding visuals industry works in cycles. During Summer we are all filming weddings and during Winter we are in the edit suite cutting masterpieces.

So thats were i've been up to this month: capturing footage, organizing it all, selecting the right clips and the right audio (location and/or music) and creating the entertaining story of the newly married couple.

I am always asking myself questions such as, how can I best tell the story of a particular aspect of a celebration, which parts of the speeches best conveys the emotion of the day, what if I use a transition dissolve here instead of a cut - how does it change the flow of the film etc etc etc It's never ending!

So, here's to a few more successful days (and nights) in the edit suite.

Cheers,
Marcus

Why Choose Video? | WEVA Brides Guide

"Professional videography saves and protects life's most precious and beautiful moments--as they actually happened. And what is more important to hold precious than the sights and sounds from the most important day of your life--your wedding day! Because the event goes by so quickly, capturing all of the activities, your ceremony and reception, on video will mean your wedding will be preserved for you and your family now, and most importantly...for all the generations ahead.

How important is a professionally-produced wedding video? Suppose a friend told you they had in one hand a book of professional photos of the day your grandparents were married, and in their other hand a professionally-produced video of that same day, in full color, with stereo sound, but that you could only choose one to view and keep as a family heirloom. Which would you choose? Today, thanks to new developments in digital technology and the advanced skills of professional videographers, your choices in professional wedding videography are unlimited!

Only video (and now DVD) will allow everyone to relive your wedding day as it actually happened‹to see you walk down the aisle, to hear your voices as you exchange vows and rings, to hear and see the toasts, the music, your first dance at the reception...and the chance to preserve the complete story of your wedding. This wasn't possible in the past.

Even today, you have only one chance to be sure your wedding day is professionally captured....just one chance to be sure all of the emotions, the love and laughter are preserved for you to share again and again. Today professional videographers have become as natural a part of the wedding as the photographer."

www.weva.com

Creating Your Own Love Story | WEVA Brides Guide

"One increasingly popular supplement to wedding day coverage is a custom-produced "Love Story Video." Also called a "Reflections Video" or a "Concept Video," this tells the story of how you both met and fell in love. You have the opportunity to let everyone -including future generations- know how your relationship evolved right up to this special day.

A Love Story Video can be as creative and special as you like, reflecting your own unique personality as a couple. Some Love Stories, for example, are produced as a music video, shot on-location with you and your fiancee at your favorite settings. Others may take the form of an indoor, or outdoor, interview session that also features important family photographs, even video clips. Still others combine the two styles.

In general, a "Love Story" is a short, fun-to-watch video. This makes it a natural addition to your reception entertainment. Imagine seeing your own Love Story unfold on the big screen at your reception, sharing it with all of your guests. Many WEVA members specialize in producing exceptional Love Stories and can arrange for yours to be shown at your reception. Additional videos can be made to send to loved ones who are unable to attend your wedding. You have a wonderful and unique story to tell. The latest advances in digital video technology now allow you to preserve and share your special story -and there's no limit to the creativity!"

Questions for a Wedding Video Producer

The following article is taken from the Wedding Directory www.i-do.com.au

It has some useful tips that you could find helpful. Some of it is a bit basic but non the less useful

What To Know About Your Wedding Video Producer

dreamlifephotosandvideo.jpgMake a shortlist of around three video producers whose style you like. You can find a list of Video Producers (videographers) in the i-do directory. Many have sample video clips you can view online from the directory.

Once you have your shorlist of video producers contact them to see if they are available on your wedding day. Don't waste time meeting with them if they won't be available to shoot your wedding.

Now its time to ask the hard questions to ensure you get the right person to document your wedding day. Here are some questions you might ask:

How much experience do you have shooting weddings?

This is a one take show - there is no reshooting your vows or the best man's speech again!

Can we see recent samples of your work?

All wedding video producers should have a demo DVD available.

What style do you film in?

The three main styles are:

Documentary: events happen naturally.

Staged: shots are set up with the wedding party. This can be fairly intrusive to have the Videographer set up scenes for your wedding guests to re-enact on your wedding day. Discuss this with your video producer as to whether you want to include staged scenes.

Video clip: lots of camera movement and effects edited to music.

Many videographers's use a combination of all the three styles.

Will you be taping my wedding or will it be someone else?

Confirm exactly who will be taping your wedding. Make sure your wedding won't be subcontracted to someone who doesn't know the details of your wedding day and how you would like your wedding shot.

Are your cameras digital?

The answer should always be "yes".

Do you carry a backup camera on the day?

Do you use a radio microphone?

For the ceremony the best audio comes from a professional quality radio microphone. It is recommended that this is worn by the groom.

Do you use a tripod?

Depending on the camera they use to shoot the wedding, a tripod may be needed to steady images during the wedding ceremony and the speeches.

Do you use lights?

Often a 50 watt camcorder light is used in low-light conditions to avoid dark "grainy" images. Many good video producers use equipment that is light sensitive so low light won't be an issue. Be sure to discuss this with the videographer.

What sort of editing equipment do you use?

A computer based non-linear editing system is standard. The system should be fully digital throughout.

How much time will you spend editing my wedding video?

It takes approx. 30-40 hours to edit a two-hour wedding video.

Can we decide how our video is edited?

General concepts for editing may be discussed, but editing is a complex and time consuming process that is best left to the professionals.

Can we choose the music used in our wedding video?

This should not be a problem provided you can supply a copy on CD.

What sort of extras do you offer?

Extras include Highlight DVD's, music clips and special effects. Ask if the video producer charges for extras.

How long will I have to wait for my wedding DVD?

A good wedding videographer should supply the completed video within 6-8 weeks.

What sort of packages do you offer and what are your prices?

Carefully compare each package. A standard package from one videographer may contain extras that you have to pay another videographer for.

Wedding packages will vary depending on how long the wedding videographer will be there on the day and price can also be affected by the number of locations the videographer needs to cover. For example, will you require the videographer to shoot at pre wedding locations such as the brides house and the grooms house.

Do you have a contract?

A formal contract states how much you pay, when payment will be required and what you will receive at the end. Read any contract carefully and discuss any matters of concern with the videographer BEFORE you sign. We recommend a signed contract from both parties every time.

Will my wedding filmed in widescreen?

Most videographers today will provide a DVD with wide screen capabilities

How many cameras do you use to film the ceremony?

Some videographers use two cameras to film the wedding ceremony. This allows the full ceremony to be filmed in its entirety, then again you may not want your ceremony to looks as if you are shooting the next block buster.

Speeches

Wedding Reception speeches can be fantastic to hear and watch for years to come.

The humorous jokes of the best man, the emotion of the Father of the Bride and the loving words of the Groom and much more can be recorded for the future.

There is a fine art to filming speeches and after over 150 weddings I've got the experience to respond to a range of situations.

Questions such as where to position the camera so as to get the best view of the bridal table without blocking the view of guests, which sound system are the speeches to be broadcast and what type of system is being used, where are the key family members sitting that may be thanked during speeches, what other sounds might be heard and need to be accounted for (e.g baby's crying), who is speaking and where are they sitting etc etc,  the list is endless.

However, you will be blissfully unaware of all these questions and all your focus will be on enjoying your celebration with the confidence that Couch Media ~ Wedding Specialists is recording everything professionally!

Needless to day we use professional wireless radio microphones to capture crisp audio for your enjoyment.

Happy Chinese New Year of The Ox

The Ox is thought to be the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. The Ox is a power sign, like the Rat, Snake, Dragon, Tiger, and Monkey.

They're quite dependable and possess an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest.

Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.

Ox people, according to tradition, need peace and quiet to work through their ideas, and when they have set their mind on something it is hard for them to be convinced otherwise. An Ox person has a very logical mind and is extremely systematic in whatever they do, though they have a tremendous imagination and an unparalleled appreciation for beauty. These people speak little but are extremely intelligent. When necessary, they are articulate and eloquent.

AVPA - Is your Wedding Video Producer Accredited?

"A good wedding video is an investment for people to cherish for generation to come so be sure you select a video producer with extensive experience in weddings. Having expertise in other video production fields will not guarantee a good result. Only a dedicated wedding video professional can offer results full of creativity and artistic flair.

In an unregulated industry, finding a professional wedding video producer can be a daunting task. So why leave your special day to chance? The AVPA is the only industry body in Australia with a formal accreditation process. It includes an intensive review of the applicants production work by an official review panel.

AVPA Accreditation is earned, not purchased.

Look out for the AVPA accredited logo!"

Bridal Fashion Shoot

In October, Couch Media teamed up with Clique Photography to document a bridal fashion shoot at Silk Road. It was a lot of fun. It was great to see how the talented Joseph Mann worked on a
fashion shoot.

With a very tight deadline, the clip was edited in just 8 hours. Sometimes a pressure cooking situation can produce your best work!

New AVPA Commitee

The AVPA's AGM was held last Tuesday at their head office in Hawthorn.

I am honored to have been nominated to the general committee. With the first meeting scheduled for later this week, I am looking forward to participating in the current revitalization of the AVPA.

Hamilton Island Wedding

Teaming up with Joseph Mann from Clique Photography, we headed up to Hamilton Island last month for the Wedding of Mallinda & Dean.

Being an island wedding, everyone was relaxed and enjoying the benefits of a mini holiday. The Chapel was very cute, sitting on top of One Tree Hill with the most amazing 360 degree views over the ocean. The weather was clear and the water blue and the palm tree gently swayed in the breeze!

Anyone planning a island wedding? Let me know, I would love to join you!

P.S I've hear Mauritius is amazing.

Wedding Reception Venues

I was just thinking about how many Wedding Reception Venues I had personally filmed at. The list is quite extensive and I'm sure there are more to add as I think of them.

Most have been very good to work with, a few fantastic and of course a small minority a nightmare that we don't work with any more (not on this list).

So, here they are in no particular order:

Manor on High, Brighton International, Florian, Nine Darling Street, Quat Quatta, The Sovereign, The Centre Ivanhoe, La Mirage, Luxor, Lakeside, Roselyn Court, Montsalvat, Ballara Receptions, Witchmount Estate, San Remo Ballroom, Butleigh Wootton, Lyrebird Falls, Park Hyatt, Mannigham Reception Center and Contessa Receptions.

Top 10 Tips on how to choose the right Wedding Cinematographer for you Special Day

These top 10 tips resulted from an informal email collaboration of Australian Video Producer Association members.
I have reproduced the list here because I feel it provides a broad overview and is a useful guide for bride's who are planning professional wedding video coverage.
Of course the value of a wedding video could have it's own top ten listing but it assumed, for now, that the value of video coverage is understood in the first place.
1. Is the Wedding Cinematographer a member of Australian Video Producers Association? www.avpa.com.au see note below.
2. Research magazines and websites. Write down what you want covered and the style of video you like.
3. Ask your friends and family why they chose a particular Wedding Cinematographer and were they happy from start to finish.
4. Make an appointment to discuss and view wedding videos of a particular Wedding Cinematographer before making any final decision.
5. Does your Video Producer present themselves in a professional manner?
6. Ask to see work that is similar to your wedding day locations.
7. Does the Wedding Cinematographer use the latest professional equipment? Can they supply High Definition on Blu-Ray if requested? (Future proofing your investment)
8. Do they use more than one camera? Do they use radio microphones? Do they have backup equipment?
9. Find out who will shoot your wedding. Ensure you see work specifically from the person who will be shooting and editing your wedding. If accreditation is claimed / advertised, is that specific person shooting / editing your video accredited?
10. Ask about their options, packages, terms and conditions. Book early to avoid disappointment.

(11.) I would like to add my own point: Find out how long it takes for your DVD to be ready and check that this time frame is guaranteed.

Note: Australian Video Producers Association www.avpa.com.au
• To encourage and promote excellence in all areas of video production.
• To guide the development and implementation of quality standards, guidelines and codes of conduct throughout the video production industry.

Cheers,
Marcus Seeger
